This site is about the commercial half of running a small firm that works to order: what goes in the quote, what happens to the invoice, what to do when it is not paid, and how to price any of it.

Before the work — quotes, scope, deposits, terms, checking who you are dealing with, and when to decline.

How to price it — the rate you actually earn, cost against price, and where losses hide.

The standard for figures

Every statistic carries its source type in the sentence — vendor research, trade body, observed payment data, or government.

Most of the numbers on this subject are vendor-produced, from samples of the vendor's own users, and that is stated at every use rather than once.

And the weakest-sourced claim here supports the site's strongest position, which is described as such rather than quietly relied upon.

What this site does not do

Give legal advice. Terms, interest, cancellation, limitation and claims are jurisdiction-dependent and summarised as shape rather than as guidance. Jurisdiction is named wherever anything legal appears.

Name products. Categories change slowly and product lines do not.

Or promise outcomes. No page says what will happen if you do these things — only what they are for and what they cost.

About the previous material

Thirteen articles published between 2013 and 2015 have been removed.

They had aged past usefulness — advice about finding customers online, written a decade ago, in a field that has changed entirely.

And several were commercial writing about specific local businesses, presented as general advice without that being disclosed. That was the practice at the time and it is not defensible now, which is the more substantial reason for removal.

The addresses return a gone response rather than redirecting, because none of the old material corresponds to anything here.

Corrections

Errors are logged. Numbers from a real business outrank anything on this site — what you changed, what happened, over what period.
